Underwood to direct Elizabeth City CVB
Dec 11, 2008 -
The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) has named Charlotte Underwood director of the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (ECACVB), the Authority announced today.
"Charlotte Underwood brings to the job a wealth of marketing, sales and community relations experience that will bolster the work of the Convention & Visitors Bureau," said TDA Chairwoman Maureen Donnelly. "Her enthusiasm for the area and all that it has to offer will only enhance Elizabeth City's reputation as the 'Harbor of Hospitality.' "
Most recently, Underwood was the public affairs manager for Sprint, now Embarq, where she managed community relations programs in an eight-county region. At Embarq, she was involved with budget development and management; chaired and managed the work of five community relations teams; coordinated events throughout the year to promote Embarq; and served as the company's Chamber of Commerce representative in the eight-county service area.
An active community volunteer, Underwood has also worked with events such as the N.C. Potato Festival, Special Olympics, Holiday Celebration and Smiles. She is a member of the Camden County Tourism Board and has collaborated with regional tourism directors on numerous events in the northeastern N.C. region. She also serves on the Albemarle Economic Development Commission's Community Image Committee.
Underwood was named "Volunteer of the Year" by the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce in 2005 and 2006. The Kiwanis Club recognized her with its "Distinguished Service Award" in 2008. Last month, she was honored for "Exemplary Dedication and Commitment to Community Enrichment" by the River City Community Development Corporation.
"Charlotte's tremendous involvement in our community for the last 36 years, along with her expertise in the areas of community relations and customer service, fit well with the needs of the Convention and Visitors Bureau," said Arthur McPherson, vice chairman of the TDA and chairman of the ECACVB personnel committee. "Her knowledge of the tourism business and her local, regional and state connections provided a unique opportunity for us to hire a local professional with a love for the Elizabeth City area."
McPherson said the TDA received more than 110 applications for the director's position. Underwood replaces Russ Haddad, who resigned earlier this year to take a job with the N.C. Division of Tourism, Film & Sports Development. As director of the ECACVB, she will oversee a $500,000 annual budget, direct the convention and visitors bureau's marketing and public relations programs and supervise paid and volunteer staff. Underwood will report to work Jan. 5, 2009.
