Downtown Waterfront Market to Open April 18
Apr 8, 2009 -
Under white tents filled with farm-fresh goods, vendors from throughout northeastern North Carolina will sell fresh produce, baked goods, gourmet foods, dairy products, plants and flowers and handcrafted wares. Local musicians and entertainers will perform, and coffee and fresh-squeezed limeades and orangeades will be available for purchase.
Brochures and fliers tout the market as a "vine-ripened, just-picked, fresh-made good time" - and that's just the atmosphere the market conveys, says Market Coordinator Denise Richards.
"It's become a great place to see your neighbors, have a coffee and enjoy the scene - while you shop for the freshest produce in town," Richards said.
This year, Richards promises more vendors, veggies and special events. Last year's race-to-the-finish "Market Challenge" cooking demonstrations will be back, with a twist. The market will feature a head-to-head chef's cook off, along with "Fresh Fare" tasting parties featuring market specialties from local restaurants. Plans for a "Little Miss and Mister Albemarle Natural Beauty Pageant," sanctioned by America's Classic Miss scholarship program, are also in the works.
"Do you know how lucky we are, to have these wonderful farms here in our own backyard? You don't have to drive all over town for ingredients to prepare an amazing meal. You can get it all here - while supporting our local farmers and purveyors."
Among the opening day farm vendors will be:
- Addie's Acres and Bodeans' Catering, offering vegetable plants and fresh-squeezed orangeade, lemonade, limeade and Pink Ladies
- Almarie Brothers, with fresh asparagus, broccoli and early spring produce
- Coinjock Creek Farms, featuring broccoli, cabbage, peas, lettuce; bedding plants; and infused oils and vinegars
- Happy Hens from Peace and Plenty Farm, selling all natural, un-graded farm-fresh eggs and pure, raw, unfiltered honey
- Holly's Melting Pot Produce and Market, offering an array of locally-grown Asian fruits and American fruits and vegetables
- Tie One On Veggie Peddler, with onions and garlic, plus purses made from vintage neck ties!
- Weeping Radish Farm Brewery, featuring hormone-free meats and sausages
Featuring the "Bounty of the County," The Downtown Waterfront Market is a not-for-profit service of the City of Elizabeth City, Albemarle Economic Development Commission, Albemarle Area Committee of 100 and the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 31, 2009. For information, call (252) 338-0169. To check the weekly produce schedule, go to www.DowntownWaterfrontMarket.com
