WHAT DOES THE ALBEMARLE AREA COMMITTEE OF 100 DO?

Elizabeth City Council and Pasquotank County Commissioners, in 1976, established an Economic Development Commission and charged it with the responsibility for promoting sound economic growth in Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County. The Albemarle Economic Development Commission has expanded its service area to include Camden County.

Many of the citizens in the community felt that economic development should be a joint venture between government and the private sector. Consequently, the Committee of 100 accepted the responsibility for supplementing the City and County funds with private sector funding. This provides for three primary classes of financial support.

  1. Contractual funds to enable optioning or purchase of industrial sites.
  2. Entertainment funds to host visiting prospects and development representatives from throughout the state, country and world.
  3. Promotional funds to permit publication of literature and advertising.

Committee members are consulted frequently for advice and guidance in economic development activity which has a significant impact on the City and Counties. They receive periodic reports on the progress of economic development activity and financial reports which account for the disposition of funds. All prospect visits requiring local participation involve Committee of 100 members and government officials.

Economic development is a means for solving economic problems and its complexity requires teamwork, dedication, interest, and sound planning. The union of a county development commission and a citizens committee is the most effective and time proven combination yet devised for economic growth at the city and county level.
